Magnesium in Australia: evidence and prices

TL;DR

Magnesium is an essential mineral found in leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds and wholegrains. Upper limits for adults apply to magnesium from supplements (350 mg/day, Australian/NZ NRV), not from food. Too much supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhoea. People with kidney disease and people on certain medicines should check with a GP or pharmacist.

What official sources say

healthdirect lists green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, and wholegrains as food sources. The Australian/NZ Nutrient Reference Values (NHMRC) set an adult upper limit of 350 mg/day for magnesium from supplements, not food. NIH ODS notes that magnesium can interact with some medicines. Forms

Supplements come in many forms (glycinate, citrate, oxide and others). NIH ODS discusses differences in absorption between forms, but labels list elemental magnesium differently, so compare the "elemental magnesium" amount on the label. [3]
