Omega-3 (fish oil) in Australia: evidence and prices
TL;DR
A large Cochrane review (86 trials, about 162,800 people) found that increasing long-chain omega-3 had little or no effect on all-cause death. Fish oil can interact with blood thinners like warfarin (evidence is mixed), so tell your GP or pharmacist if you take one.
Heart outcomes
The Cochrane review CD003177 included 86 randomised trials with 162,796 participants and suggested little or no effect of increasing long-chain omega-3 on all-cause mortality. See the review for the outcome-by-outcome findings. [1]
Interactions
NIH ODS notes fish oil might prolong clotting time with warfarin, though most research suggests 3–6 g/day does not significantly affect anticoagulant status. NCCIH has a consumer summary. [2] [3]
